THORPARK
In 10 km², you’ll find almost everything that makes the Hoge Kempen region typical: mining slag heaps amidst heathlands and pine forests, a brook valley (Stiemerbeek valley), and the juniper scrub (Heiderbos). Thorpark is an area of 10 km² behind the former Waterschei mine. The area has so many qualities that it will eventually be part of the National Park. Here, you’ll find everything the Hoge Kempen has to offer: mining slag heaps amidst heath and pine forests, a beautiful brook valley, junipers, and sand dunes. Some notable buildings add character to the landscape: the children’s colony of As and the Waterschei coal mine (Thor Central). You can already hike extensively here, but a gateway in the well-known design of other gates is (still) not available.

DE MATEN
This route introduces you to the wonderfully beautiful nature reserve between Genk and Diepenbeek. You’ll walk along the many ponds of the Maten to the Diepenbeek Forest. Note: dogs are not allowed on this route due to the presence of many vulnerable animals in the area.
Scenically, this is the most varied walk in Bokrijk and Kiewit, where you’ll discover all aspects, from ponds to forests, from Galloways to herons. A demanding trip, but definitely worth it.
Starting Point: Slagmolenweg 76, Genk Slagmolen
Enjoy your hiking!
